Bixby vs. Google Assistant

Since the introduction of Siri as a feature of the iPhone 4S on October 4, 2011, the smart virtual assistant scene on smartphones have transcended into something more of a necessity than a luxury or just an extra feature. Now we have the Alexa from Amazon, Siri from Apple, Google Assistant from Google, Cortana from Microsoft and the newest addition to the collection, Bixby from the Korean giant, Samsung.

Today the debate, however, seems to be about which one is better between Bixby and the seemingly omnipresent Google Assistant. So, Bixby is basically Samsung’s contestant in the world of Virtual Assistants. Even though after its arrival on April 21, 2017, Bixby had a hard time keeping up with the other virtual assistants present in the market at the time, plus the fact that it was not operational in the US version of the Samsung S8 and S8+ didn’t help in any way. It has come a long way from that and now with the improvements, new features and better integration it has with almost every Samsung appliance, Bixby 2.0 which made its debut on the Galaxy Note 9 with a mountain of new abilities is a more worthwhile assistant that it is able to spark a debate, of which is a better virtual assistant, Bixby or Google Assistant.

Google Assistant launched in 2016 and it is considered one of the most advanced and dynamic assistants out there, with Cortana being a very close match. One thing that makes it similar to the Bixby is that, apart from being deeply integrated into every Google-owned hardware, it is integrated far and wide into basically any company’s device Google has a partnership with. These devices range from fridges to headphones, washing machines to cars, down to speakers and digital table clocks. With all this being said, you might wonder what the main differences between both assistants are. The Google Assistant is an extension of Google now, while revamped to be personal. It made use of all the existing “OK Google” voice controls, however, it has been optimized to intelligently retrieve important and relevant information for you. You might even be tempted to ask if Bixby and Google Assistant are not just similar products under different brand names, however, that’s not true at all.

Even though both of them are built to be virtual assistants, they both perform different yet complementary functions. The fact that they can work seamlessly side by side on the same device and not affect the functionality of one another lays testament to the fact that they do relatively different things. I could go on and on about what one can do and the other cannot but I prefer to use the testaments of real-life users of the two assistants on AC.

Here are the opinions of different users of the Assistants;

“To overgeneralize, Bixby is for on-phone navigation, options, and operation. Google Assistant if for everything else, it excels at internet-based queries and actions.”

“They are not comparable. They are meant for totally different purposes and both are great and work very well together.”

    I’ve heard of Google Assistant but not Bixby. I’m unfamiliar with some of the smart virtual assistants besides Suri and Alexa. I’m impressed with Alexa and how Amazon ties it in with everything they sell. Could anyone give me reasons why I should try Google Assistant and Bixby rather than something like Alexa? I’m all about using the best product and tech is constantly changing so what was the best one day might be yesterday’s news. So when you say Bixby vs. Google Assistant, what’s the advantages and disadvantages of each and the comparisons all about?

      Bixby is only on Samsung products. So if you dont have a Samsung product then dont worry about Bixby

    I liked this overview of Bixby vs. Google Assistant. How many smart virtual assistants are out there? Are there any that came out and bombed because they were so bad? I’m always learning about new apps and technology so I was intrigued when I learned about Bixby. I’d like to get a reliable assistant with no security issues. Anyone care to recommend some?
